The Claire Stanley Trust

Claire Stanley

Earlier this year my lovely Aunt Claire sadly passed away after a long fight with cancer. Her husband Darrell has set up a trust in her name, which can be found at this facebook page. Please 'like' this page and help us remember Claire.

The Claire Stanley Trust is devoted to helping raise money for research into cancer treatments, equipment for treating or curing cancers and generally to help in any way possible to extend people’s lives or at least improve their quality of life.

Check out Pegasus Bridge

I just heard an awesome tune from Pegasus bridge on the Best of Myspace podcast. Their song Yoko really livened up a dull Thursday morning drive and I think everyone should hear it. A truly excellent guitar/synth opening that had me wondering how the hell they got that sound. I want that sound!

Check out their myspace page here.

Big thanks to Best of Myspace for giving me the new music!

Covering Silences With Lies on Itunes

Covering Silences With Lies album cover

My 2nd album Covering Silences With Lies is now available for download on iTunes! Described by The Mag as "A truly lovely listen", this album departed from the rock sound of "The End of Daydreaming" and allowed me to woo a different audience. Check it out now by searching for "Oliver Gearing" in your iTunes store.

Of course you can hear the whole album on this site, alongside my entire back-catalogue. Click here or visit the top menu link "Albums".

Great site: Best of Myspace

I've just discovered a brilliant podcast - Best of Myspace - where myspace users nominate great unsigned bands from the myspace roster - and then 10 are chosen each week and wrapped up in a 45 min podcast.

Check it out here

It's really great to hear how much amazing music is out there - so a big thank you to whoever puts the podcast together!

Using Bluetooth to Promote Your Band

BluetoothHi again!

Technology has moved at a fair pace recently hasn't it? Whilst bluetooth is not exactly new technology it is an area most bands or artists are not utilising. We've all got bluetooth installed on our phone, and we've all got the ability to play MP3s on our phones.

Answer this question:

"How many times have you bluetoothed someone one of your tracks?"

  1. Between 0 and 10
  2. Between 10 and 100
  3. Over 100

If the answer is point 1 or 2 then you are missing a trick. Everyone you meet with a bluetooth enabled phone is a potential new fan. Your aim must be to send them a track, and a link to your website. The trick is to get them to ask for the MP3 (a similar approach must be adopted if you carry business cards). How do you do this?

People love talking about music. People love talking about bands. People love talking about your band, but only for about 1 minute! So in that minute you've got to tell them your name, your genre, and offer a free bluetooth download. While your at it attempt to grab their email / facebook / myspace contacts and you've got a new registered fan!

I hope you find this useful - please feedback to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it your findings.

New Song - Mistaken

I am pleased to present the final piece of the puzzle of The Lost Album: a new song called Mistaken. Written in Dorchester in a period when I was waiting for work to come in, I was surprised by how happy this song sounds. My original idea was to turn it into a song I could sell to publishers in order to get a deal - but when I finished the final pieces of the jigsaw yesterday I realised that I'm never going to let this one be sung by anyone else!

You can play the song here -

or download it by right-clicking here.

I hope you like the song. It's a bit scary as I've been hiding behind this Lost album for a while - it's meant I don't need to release any NEWNEWNEWNEW material. Now I'm going to be focussing on the next release I'm gonna have to pull my finger out! First thing I need to do is find a name... Wish me luck!

CDs will soon be pressed!

The Lost Album - soon to be available as a real CDOne of the biggest problems facing unsigned musicians like myself is the question of pressing CDs. The minimum run size is often in the 100s (or even 1000s) which is quite a commitment!

Well thank goodness for the lovely people at Amazon and Tunecore! They allow artists to upload the music and artwork, and they do the rest! Which means that you (constant listener) have far more choice. You can continue to download my songs for free, or if your prefer to have the physical asset of a CD in your hand you can buy one from Amazon.

Watch this space for news on physical CDs, and please visit tunecore to find out more if you're interested in doing this yoursef!

New song! Your Choice

So it's with slightly baited breath that I release Your Choice for the world to hear... This is a very poppy song, which isn't a sound I've messed about with previously. I wrote this whilst walking(!) which is something I've started to do more and more. By the time I got home the chorus was spinning round in my head so much that I had to grab a guitar and get it out. Much like Eddie finds in The Dark Tower by Stephen King, creating something from nothing is a bit like revealing something that's already present. The trick is to get the sound (or wooden carving as in Eddie's case) exactly like you imagined it. Harder to do than it is to say...! So enjoy the listen - and if you haven't already - go ahead and read The Dark Tower by Steven King!

Lyrics

It's been seven days since you said you're gonna call me back,
I think that's long enough to say
That you never wanted to promise you'd ever be anything else than what you are,
Now I've come to realise

That I want to be loved,
Don't want to be just someone you think of when you're low.
I told you to go,
But you say "hello".
Didn't you know?

That I won't pretend that you didn't hurt me.
And I won't pretend that there's nothing wrong.
So if you pretend that everything's O.K.
That's your choice.
That's your choice.

It's been twenty days and you say you don't understand.
You say "nothing's got to change."
But how can nothing change but the way I pretend everything could be a happy end?
Now that's just wrong.

'Cause I want to be loved...

Chorus

I told you I would go,
And I want to let you know,
There's nothing you can do to change my mind.
I promise you this time,
There's nothing left of mine...

'Cause I want to be loved...

Chorus

Student loan deflation

Slightly off the music topic here, but I couldn't help but mention this.

  • Anyone taking out a student loan after 1998 was told that it would follow inflation (i.e. the value of the money borrowed would not increase)
  • We are currently in deflating economy (-0.4%)
  • So surely our student loans should be reduced by that amount?

I'm afraid not. The government are keeping the level at 0%! If you think this is wrong, then sign the petition below!

Visit this link to sign the petition

As part of the generation that was herded into University, I feel that the government have a duty to make good on their promises from previous administrations. Rather than spending all our money on mortgage payments for country homes they never visit!

If you think I should stick to blogging about music - let me know on the shoutbox!

Eurovision: A good year!

Alex Rybak winning EurovisonSometimes I find myself getting really annoyed with Eurovision, and some years it makes me really happy! This year was one of them! I'm really pleased the person that won (Alex Rybak) actually writes and performs his own music, and I'm especially pleased that the UK entry did not win. Andrew Lloyd Webber's song was mediocre at best, although the performance of Jade Ewen was very good indeed. The man has written some classics, and it can't be denied that his shows are some of the best around - but currently he is milking that reputation to become a Simon Cowellesque figure for the BBC.

Reasons to love Eurovision:

  1. It's fun!
  2. The wide range of musical styles
  3. The ridiculously over-the-top performances by many acts
  4. The cultural sounds that filter through from different Euro countries

So go out and support Alex and his music!!!

Joomla Music Component

Firstly a thanks to Dan Scott for this awesome tool. Anyone who wants a simple yet effective method of organising their music collection on their Joomla powered site should look no further!

You can download the tool here:

 In a nutshell:

  • The tool allows you to define Artist, Album, and Song.
  • You can link to any mp3 files you have uploaded on your site.
  • You can upload front and back artwork to be displayed
  • You can add a description of the album or biog.

Now then - how to implement...

  1. Download the tool
  2. Install to Joomla in the normal way
  3. Go to Components / artist and add a new artist.
  4. Go to Components / album and add your first album for this artist. Fill in the parameters as prompted (N.B. to show the music player you must have the josdewplayer installed - click here to get the player.)
  5. Go to Components / song and add your first album for this album. Here you can choose the track number, and select your song from a drop down list. Any song in your images/songs folder is selectable!
  6. Final job is to add your albums as menu items! On my site I have a main menu item called 'Albums' which points to my latest release The Lost Album, and then there are three further nested menu items for my complete discography.

Easy peasy - any probs give me shout on my contact page and I'll see if I can help!

Songs must be in images/songs

Artwork must be in images/albumart
